Food Production in Different Countries

All the 6th Grade students did research on how different countries produce and consume food. Once they learned about their country, they worked in groups to create a multimedia presentation that answered the various research questions. This lesson took six class periods to complete.

Science Research and Online Databases

The 8th Grade Science students used some of the online databases to which the school subscribes to do research for their interdisciplinary project (IDU). They saved their research notes and constructed their bibliography in a Google Docs document that they shared. This lesson took three class periods to complete.

Electricity and Online Simulations

Some of the 8th Grade Science students used the PhET Interactive Simulations site to answer questions posted by their teacher. This lesson took two class periods to complete.

The Greeks and Webquests

All the 6th Grade Social Studies students accessed a variety of webquests, which helped them explore different aspects of the ancient Greek civilization. The lessons took two class periods to complete.

Globalization and Word

Some of the 8th Grade Social Studies students searched for images that they used to create a collage that explained concepts about globalization, which they are currently studying. This lesson took three class periods to complete.

Earthquake Research and Filemaker

The 7th Grade Science students used Filemaker and the USGS site to examine earthquake activity around the world. First the students created a data base with Filemaker and then they imported a CSV file with almost 60,000 earthquakes that have been recorded since the 1970's. Later, they used Filemaker to sort and search the data, looking for patterns with the longitude, latitude, magnitude and depth. The lesson took four class periods to complete.

Five Pillars and Powerpoint

The 7th Grade Social Studies students used a webquest to research about the Five Pillars of the Muslim religion. Once they gathered the information, they created a Powerpoint which summarized their learning. This lesson took four class periods to finish.

Ancient India and Photoshop

Some of the 6th Grade Social Studies students used Photoshop to create a poster that detailed different aspects of the ancient Indian society. This project took three class periods to complete.

Electromagnetic Waves and Filemaker Pro 9

The 7th Grade Science students created a data base that organized all the different waves in the electromagnetic spectrum. The students had text and container fields, which they laid out to display the data researched. The lesson took four days to complete.

Chilean Environmental Issues and Powepoint

The 6th Grade Science students did research on a topic related to the Chilean environment. They used a variety of sources, including Wikipedia, Google, and the EBSCO online databases to find information. Once they had information, the students built a powerpoint presentation, according to the teachers' rubric. Students who researched a native Chilean animal like the pudú or the vizcacha, were able to include a simple food web exported from Inspiration.

Black Death Journal and Google Docs and Word

The 7th Grade Social Studies students did research on conditions in Europe during the Bubonic Plague. They recorded their notes in a document created and saved in their Google Docs account. From there, the students created a Word document that they formatted like a medieval journal or diary. Drawing from their notes in Google Docs, the students wrote about the plague from the point of view of a person living during that time period. This lesson took four days to complete.

Research with Online Databases and Google Docs

The 8th grade Science students accessed the EBSCO online database in order to gather information for their presentation on global warming. They also looked for information in Newsbank and SIRS. Each group created a bibliography document that they shared in Google Docs. The students also used Google Docs to take notes and collect images during their research. This lesson took four class periods to finish.

iMovie and Antoine de Saint-Exúpery

The 6th grade national Spanish students used a teacher made questionnaire to complete a webquest about the life of Antoine de Saint-Exúpery. Once they had all the information that they needed, the students created an iMovie file to which they added graphics, text and audio all related to de Saint-Exúpery's life. When the students finished, they exported their video in a format that could be sent to their teacher's shared folder. This lesson took four class periods to complete.

European Trade and Photoshop

The 8th grade Social Studies students worked in pairs to create two maps in Photoshop. One map charted the 15th century World as the Europeans knew it at the time, and the other map showed the principal trade routes of the Mediterranean Sea. The students had to delineate, color in and label various territories and bodies of water. They also varied the opacity to obtain different effects and they had to calibrate the brush tool to trace out the different trade routes. On the third day of this lesson, the students responded to a set of questions which asked them to make interpretations about information they had on their maps.

Spanish Webquest and Word

The 6th grade national Spanish students used this teacher made webquest to research for information about a particular poet. The students accessed this file from a shared folder on the server, renamed and saved a copy of the webquest into their own home directory, and upon completion, they dropped a copy of the webquest into their teacher's drop box. This lesson took one class period to complete.

Carbon Footprints

The 6th Grade Science classes used the web site called Carbon Footprint to calculate the greenhouse gases produced from air and car travel. The air travel figures are all calculated from Santiago (SCL) and the students could choose whatever make of cars that they wanted. The students used an Excel worksheet to gather their data. Once they made the corresponding graphs, the students dropped the assignment into their teacher's drop box. Most students needed three days to complete the assignment.

Current Events in Science

6th Grade Science students used the EBSCO online data base, (to which Nido subscribes) to research about any current event in Science that interested them. The students practiced choosing appropriate keywords and narrowing down their topic with a directory search. The students also searched by the lexile scores of the articles to eliminate documents that were beyond their reading level. Once they had found an article they liked, the 6th Graders used Word to write a short summary that they later presented to the class.
