The objective of our blog is to share information about how we integrate our technology curriculum into the subject area curriculum. The foundation of this effort is the methodology of team teaching the lessons with the Middle School subject area teachers. Each post describes a particular lesson, the software used, some of the skills that were targeted, and the number of days that were spent in the lab.

Surface Areas, Volumes and Excel

The 8th Grade Geometry students used Excel to create formulas for surface area and volume of different 3D figures. Then they compared the ratio of the surface area and the volume, and drew conclusions from the different measurements that they tried. This lesson took one class period to complete.

The 8th Grade Geometry students used Geometer's Sketchpad to study the relationships between the angles and the sides of different parallelograms. The students took one class period to finish the assignment.

Parallel Lines, Transversals and Geometer's Sketchpad

The 8th Grade Geometry students used Geometer's Sketchpad to construct a transversal to two parallel lines. Once all those lines were constructed, the students measured the angles formed and then made conjectures about the different types of angles. The lesson took one class period to complete.

Exploring Angle Relationships in Circles with Geometer's Sketchpad

The 8th grade Geometry students used Geometer's Sketchpad to create figures that they could move, and from the movement of different points and lines, the students gathered data that helped them make conjectures about the relationships between the angles and the circles. This lesson took one and a half class periods to complete.

Surface Area and Excel

The 8th grade Geometry students used Excel to compare the surface areas and volumes of different geometric shapes. They created formulas so that they could find the dimensions of the container with the minimum surface area possible that still maintained the target volume. This lesson took one class period to finish.

Angle Bisectors and Geometer's Sketchpad

The 8th grade Geometry students constructed triangles in Geometer's Sketchpad. Then they studied the relationships between the line segments that were created when an angle bisector divided the opposite side of the triangle into two segments. The students calculated proportions and made conjectures about these proportions as the vertices of the triangles were moved. This lesson took one class period.



Trigonometric Ratios and Geometer's Sketchpad

The 8th grade Geometry students constructed an angle, CAB, and a line perpendicular to ray AB. Then they compared the ratios of certain line segments of the figure. They created a table in which they recorded the changes in the lengths of the line segments, every time they moved a certain point, D, up and down the perpendicular. Later they moved point C, which changed the measure of angle CAB. Later, the students moved point D again, and recorded the changes in a table. They also observed what happened to the different ratios, and from these observations, they wrote conjectures about the ratios.

Similar Triangles and Geometer's Sketchpad

The 8th grade Geometry students used Geometer's Sketchpad to explore the different properties of similar triangles. They followed instructions for the construction of the different figures and then stopped to answer questions and make conjectures about the relationships of the different angles and sides.

Golden Ratios and Geometer's Sketchpad

The 8th grade Geometry students used Geometer's Sketchpad to analyze how to build the "Golden Ratio" with different geometric shapes. Students needed to used points, rays, circles, midpoints and perpendicular lines to set up the ratios.

Exploring Isosceles Trapezoids in Geogebra

8th Grade Geometry students used an open source program called Geogebra to explore tech integration possibilities with their geometry lessons. The students constructed points, lines and angles. After studying the relationships between the length of the lines and the measures of the angles (as Point D varied along line b), they attempted to formulate rules about the diagonals of the isosceles trapezoids. The students needed one class to complete the assignment.
