Welcome to the MS Computer Lab Blog!

The objective of our blog is to share information about how we integrate our technology curriculum into the subject area curriculum. The foundation of this effort is the methodology of team teaching the lessons with the Middle School subject area teachers. Each post describes a particular lesson, the software used, some of the skills that were targeted, and the number of days that were spent in the lab.

Technology Portfolio

The 6th Grade students have created a portfolio in PowerPoint that they use to record what they learn when they visit the lab. At the beginning of the year, the students learn how to set up the portfolio in their Science class, however, the students can add slides about lessons from any subject area. The basic layout of the portfolio is that each lesson is represented by two slides: one slide is a screenshot of the document created, and the second slide is a paragraph that reflects on what the student learned and what he or she could do better the next time around.

Audacity and a Vocabulary Podcast

Some 6th Grade Language Arts students used Audacity to create a podcast about vocabulary words that they were studying in class. Students learned how to split an audio clip. They also learned how to cut, copy and paste, audio selections from the Audacity timeline. At the end of the project, the students exported their podcast as an mp3 file. This lesson took three class periods to complete.

Language Arts Project - Who Am I?

The 7th Grade Language Arts students culminated their study of figurative language by creating an iMovie that described themselves with similes and metaphors. Some of the tech skills required were to place text over the video, and to record two sound tracks. When finished, the students had to export their movie to a compressed format and drop it into a local drop box.

Multiple Intelligences and Excel

The 8th Grade Language Arts Class researched information about multiple intelligences and then did a short survey that generated a bar graph with their own profiles. Once the graph was complete, the students used the Mid-Student Volume to find one of two classmates who were stationed at color printers. The students dropped their graphs into the drop boxes of the students at the print stations and all of the profiles were printed in color.
